Dunfermline (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Phàrlain) is a town in Fife which had city status until 1970. It was an ancient capital of Scotland and is located on high ground three miles from the northern shore of the Firth of Forth, northwest of Edinburgh.

Dunfermline's historic abbey, now a parish church, is the burial place for many of Scotland's monarchs, including Malcolm III, Saint Margaret and Robert I. Also associated with Dunfermline and the abbey is the poet Robert Henryson, one of the country's most important literary figures. The ruins of the the abbey's former monastic buildings, which include the Royal Palace of Dunfermline, are one of town's main tourist attractions.

In modern times, the most famous son of Dunfermline was the wealthy industrialist, businessman, and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. He was the central figure in promoting early twentieth century urban renewal for the town of his birth and his financial legacy is still of major importance.

Traditional industries in the Dunfermline catchment area have principally involved textiles, engineering, defence and electronics. In more recent times this has begun to diversify into the service sectors, including tourism.

According to the recent population estimate (2006), the town is believed to be around 45,462 making it the second largest in Fife. It also falls under the wider Dunfermline and West-Fife Local Plan area which has an overall total population of around 100, 324.

Dunfermline is commonly referred to as the Toun, a word in Scots which can refer to any form of settlement from farm estate to burgh or city.
